Steelhead fishing is in a bit of a holding pattern right now. Plenty of fish around, but water temperatures are cold and water levels are back down to normal. The next thaw should really get it fired up!

The Big Man ia currently still cold. 37 degrees and has both its Winter fish and a fair amount of Spring Steelies. The fish seem to be spread out between the Mouth and Tippy Dam. Float fishing with Spawn has been good. Concentrate on the soft current seams, Spring Steelhead do not like the fast water until temperatures rise. The best fly patterns have been clown eggs, nuke eggs and hex nymps. The Manistee is behind schedule due to the cold temperature and should peak about the 3rd week in April and last well into May.

Steelhead fishing has been decent, but not great since the 1st of the year. We have to put time in in order to do well at this time of the year, the afternoons have been better. Fresh Fish will normally enter the Lower River during any type of snowmelt or rise in water levels. We have a few fish trickling into the system. Our Spring Fish should be in the system by Mid March. Small Nymphs, Egg Flies, Spawn Bags and Plugs will continue to produce fish throughout the Winter Months.

Low, clear water is hampering steelhead fishing. Needless to say, the better fishing will be in the deeper holes or in the lower river. Try drifting or floating spawn or flies.

Manistee River Fishing Report for Nov. 8, 2012

Water levels are low and clear again which makes steelhead fishing somewhat difficult. Conditions like this require light leaders and small stealthy presentations to get them to bite.

Manistee River Fishing Report for Nov. 1, 2012

The steelhead action is underway. Water levels were low and clear so rain should help push more fish up into the river. Some are fly fishing with eggs while others may try casting small spoons or spinners. Good colors to try would be orange, pink, chartreuse, blue and silver along with orange and silver.

Salmon are on the definite downslide. Fish are still there but most are actively spawning and therefore not biting. Recent rain did bring some nice chrome steelhead into the river.
